Managing groups and role-based access control within Halo

We have great news for all you Halo users. In the coming weeks we’ll be rolling out blog posts which contain useful explainer videos with instructions and tips for using the updated Halo platform. The first two videos dive into how to manage groups and roles within Halo.

Managing groups

Our first video breaks down one of the most important changes to the new Halo interface, how groups are managed. In the old interface, groups had a flat structure, with one leading group and several child groups. But with the new interface, groups can be arranged in a hierarchy, meaning you can set up your groups to mimic your business units, configuration management tools, and more.

The video below walks you through the step-by-step process of how to create these new parent and subgroups so you interface is both intuitive and organized.

Role-based access control

The second video explains how roles are implemented within Halo and how they can be used to control access to Halo groups and policies. In Halo, each person is assigned to a role and a group. The combined assignment of a group and role sets the parameters for a user’s privileges within Halo. Both role and group are assigned when a new user is created. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t retroactively assign users (who were set up prior) into roles and groups as you customize your Halo interface.

Roles are categorized as: administrator, standard, auditor, and GhostPorts. Users with the administrator role will have full read / write access to whichever group they are assigned to, while the standard role is a subset under the administrator role that has rights to perform nearly every task within their respective group. GhostPorts access can be added to an administrator or auditor role, or be used as a standalone role, while the auditor role provides the user with a read-only version of the group they are assigned to.
